"How do you finance your studies? Do you receive BAföG?"

You will certainly hear these questions more often before or during your studies. However, what does the term BAföG actually mean? BAföG (educational grant) is the official abbreviation for the Federal Education and Training Assistance Act. Colloquially speaking, BAföG refers to the financial support that you can apply for at the BAföG Agency, if you want to study and need financial support.

It is money from the state, so to speak, which you receive in monthly payments. It is half a grant and half a loan without interest. According to the Federal Education and Training Assistance Act, every young person, regardless of his or her individual, social and economic situation, should be able to complete an education and receive the necessary support.

In order to receive BAföG, you must meet certain requirements and apply for it at the BAföG Agency of the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe.

We are mandated by law to work for all students of the following universities:
  • Karlsruhe
  • Pforzheim
  • Bad Liebenzell

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR BAFÖG
You have to submit an application. You can submit a complete application with the form 1. If you do not manage to submit all documents together with the form 1 in time, you can first submit an informal application in order to meet the deadline and hand in all documents together with Form 1 later. This ensures that you do not miss the earliest possible time to receive BAföG. The start is the day of the month in which the training begins. If you submit it later, you can only receive BAföG from the month of the application.

Important:
The BAföG office team can therefore only approve your entitlement to training support from the month in which we received the application. Subsequent approval is not possible. The postmark of the Financial Support Agency counts here.

For forms, tips on how to fill out and further answers to your questions, see the Download form and BAföG-ABC.
