Nationwide planting competition “Germany hums” - participation of the City bees in the daycare center Sternschnuppe of the Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe
29.07.2024The children and staff at the Sternschnuppe daycare center enthusiastically took part in the nationwide planting competition “Deutschland summt - Pflanzwettbewerb”. The aim of this

The Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe offers student parents 85 childcare places in two daycare centers in Karlsruhe as well as 10 places at the university location in Pforzheim. In order to bring the children closer to nature and wildlife, the Sternschnuppe daycare center is taking part in the
. The project started on 01.04.2024. “The bees need a home!” was heard from many children. That's why the outdoor area was redesigned together with the children and an XXXL insect hotel was set up, built by Mr. Schäfer, a carpenter from Phillipsburg/Huttenheim, who makes the insect hotels by hand. On 15.04.2024, the daycare center won a herb package as part of the “Kräuterkids24” project and planted a large herb bed. Regional cooperation partners such as the Stoll tree nursery, Heckert
Gartencenter, Pflanzen Mauk and Gärtnerei Bühler supported the project with plants and materials. During a family afternoon, earwig hotels were made, stones were painted, honey was tasted and honey bee cookies were baked. A beekeeper from Karlsruhe, Tobias Neukamm, visited the daycare center and answered numerous questions from the children about bees.
The teachers have noticed that the children are much less afraid of bees and insects since the start of the project and instead observe the animals with great interest. The children are also very enthusiastic about the various jobs that have to be done in the garden. They are always very sad when it rains and they can't water the plants themselves.“Of course, we hope that the jury will be just as enthusiastic about our project as the children, parents and staff at the Sternschnuppe daycare center. So keep your fingers crossed that we also get a place on the winners' podium in August,” says Petra Günther, Deputy Head of the Childcare Department at Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe.Further information and exciting activities as part of the project can be found at:
